Make Sure you Mind the Mattress Mum! |
Countless reports are coming out all the time on the health benefits which can be gained from getting ‘quality’ sleep. But quality sleep only really comes when using adequate beds and bedding items. Therefore, should we really be buying cheap beds, and what are the long term health problems that could arise out of sleeping on substandard mattresses? |

Buying a $2,000 bed for $400 in a special promotion or closing down sale, does not put the bed in the category of cheap beds. Cheap beds, as in they’re always cheap, are usually substandard beds made from inexpensive materials whch are made specifically for the budget market. Beds and bedding contribute greatly to your ‘quality’ of sleep and so it’s always a good idea to buy the best that you can afford. Therefore, always shop for discounted products over cheap ones.
There are Cheap Beds and there are Beds made Cheaply!
Let’s try to put some perspective on this, because different folks have different ideas of what’s cheap and what’s not. There are 2 types of cheap beds. The first is cheap and nasty (meaning made cheaply), and the second is cheap because they are old stock or being reduced for a sale or promotion (see above). There is an in between however, which comes under the category of 'good value for money'. These are neither cheap nor expensive and provide consumers with a compromise.
Cheap and nasty should be avoided at all costs unless you're really strapped for cash. But even then you should try to look at cheap beds as a temporary solution as they could give you all kinds of complaints related to low quality sleep and or aches and pains, including the back problems.
Although the initial cost of a good bed is quite high, let's not forget that it really can be a long term investment. Some folks have their beds for years and years, and even after a lifetime of blissful sleeping, many love their bed so much that they simply replace the mattress only when the old one has seen better days. But fear not, there are many cheap beds that are good beds providing you know what you're looking for.
Did you know for example that beds are perhaps the most important investments you can make for the home? Consider this, every £100 you spend on a bed represents just 2.7p a night over 10 years (you can work out your own calculations based on your own currency).
Most expensive is not always the best and there's a lot of sales hype based around the bed frame, style and engineering. That said, it's worth spending as much as you can afford to on a really good mattress. A good quality mattress will last you between 8 to 10 years of daily use.
Apart from the wear and tear of the mattress over the years, an aging bed isn't very hygienic at all. Over time the mattress absorbs all our sweat and drool and becomes a permanent home to dust mites.
Not many people think about this, but the average person spends approximately 1 third of their life sleeping, and that’s one heck of a lot of lying down. You can probably see now why it’s necessary to avoid cheap beds (that’s cheap and tacky), if you care anything about your general health and wellbeing. I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep on repeating it; discounted beds as in quality beds in a sale, are not the same as cheap beds which have been made cheaply to sell at low cost. If money is an issue, always look out for the discounts and not the fixed low cost products.
So you might be wondering what it is you need to be looking for when shopping for a bed. Well, to begin with you need to check whether it is too hard or too soft. You can do this by lying on your back. You then need to place your hand in the small of your back and check for movement. If your hand moves too easily, then the bed may be too hard for you. If you find you can't move your hand or movement is somewhat restricted, then it's most likely far too soft. .It is only when you can move your hand with just a little resistance, that bed may be just right for you. If in doubt, ask the store professional.
So there we have it. You don't have to spend a fortune on a bed, unless you want to, and it's the mattress that needs more inspection than the bed frame. Whether you're looking for childrens beds, a cheap canopies bed, a futon bed, trundle beds, or a new king size job for the master bedroom, you can make great savings when you know what to look for. Don't forget to check for customer reviews online too, as a few minutes reading up on these will surely put you in a better position to make an informed decision prior to purchase.
